Answer Engine Optimization: how to get cited by AI

Search is splitting in two. Alongside the familiar list of blue links, a growing share of questions now get answered directly — by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. Those answers name a few sources. Answer Engine Optimization is how you become one of them.

AEO, GEO, LLM SEO: the same shift, different names

You will see three terms for this: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), and LLM SEO. They describe the same change — optimizing so that AI systems, not just search engines, surface and cite your content. AEO stresses the answer, GEO stresses the generative engine, and LLM SEO stresses the model. The playbook is the same, and it rhymes with good SEO. Why it matters now

When someone asks an assistant “what’s the best tool for X?” or “how do I fix Y?”, the assistant replies with a short answer and a handful of named sources. If you are not one of those sources, you are invisible in exactly the place a growing number of buyers now start. Being un-cited by AI is the new being on page two — except far fewer people are measuring it, which is precisely the opening.

How AI answer engines pick their sources

Different engines work differently, but the same five signals decide whether you get named:

  • Access. The search crawlers that surface citations — OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT), Googlebot (Google Search and AI Overviews), PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot — have to be allowed to read your site. Block those and nothing else matters. Training crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended are a separate choice: blocking them opts you out of model training, not out of live AI answers.
  • Clarity. Content that states facts plainly, in clean HTML with real headings and structure, is far easier for a model to extract and quote than something buried in scripts or vague prose.
  • Structure. Schema markup and a machine-readable summary (llms.txt) help engines understand what your page is and which parts to trust.
  • Authority. Engines lean on sources that the wider web already cites and trusts. Mentions and links from credible sites raise your odds of being named.
  • Accuracy. Answer engines are cautious about being wrong. Content that is specific, current, and verifiable is safer to cite than thin or dated pages.

The AEO checklist

Concrete steps, roughly in order of leverage:

  1. Let the search crawlers in. Confirm OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot are not blocked — these decide whether you can be cited. Choosing whether to allow the training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, CCBot) is a separate decision. Check both with the Robots.txt + AI-Bot Tester.
  2. Answer the question directly. Lead each page with a clear, self-contained answer to the question it targets, then support it. Models quote the sentence that answers the query.
  3. Structure for machines. Use real headings, lists and tables, and add schema markup so engines can parse your content. Validate it so it actually applies.
  4. Publish an llms.txt (optional). It is an emerging convention, not a proven ranking factor — no major engine documents using it yet. But it is cheap and harmless, and it offers AI a curated map of your key pages. Generate a starter llms.txt, refine it, and publish it at your root.
  5. Be accurate and current. Date your content, cite your own sources, and fix stale facts. Citation-worthiness is a trust game.
  6. Earn mentions. The same authority that helps SEO helps AEO — genuine coverage and links from credible, relevant sites.
  7. Measure and iterate. Track whether the engines actually name you, and for which questions, then close the gaps.

AEO does not replace SEO

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of making your content easy for AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude — to find, understand, trust, and cite. Where classic SEO competes for a ranked link, AEO competes to be the source an AI names in its answer.

How is AEO different from SEO?

They overlap heavily — both reward crawlable, well-structured, authoritative content. AEO adds a second bar: the content has to be citation-worthy. An AI answer names a handful of sources, not ten blue links, so being merely rankable is not enough; you have to be the clear, factual, trusted answer to the question being asked.

Is AEO the same as GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

They describe the same shift under different names. GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the more common term for optimizing to appear in the output of generative AI engines. AEO emphasizes the answer itself. In practice the tactics are the same: be crawlable, be clearly structured, be accurate, and earn citations.

How do I know if AI already cites me?

Do I need to block or allow AI crawlers?

It depends which ones — they are not all the same. To be discovered and cited, allow the search crawlers: OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), Googlebot (Google Search and AI Overviews), PerplexityBot, and Claude-SearchBot (Claude search). These decide whether you can appear in a live AI answer. A separate set are training crawlers — GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), Google-Extended (Gemini), and CCBot (Common Crawl). Blocking a training crawler only opts you out of model training; it does not remove you from AI answers. Google-Extended, for example, does not affect Google Search at all.
